Trombone Teacher

One of the most influential brass players of our time—now a soloist, conductor, and pedagogue—Ian Bousfield has been at the top of his profession for more than 40 years. He served as principal trombone of the Vienna Philharmonic and the London Symphony Orchestra in an orchestral career spanning thirty years. As a soloist, he has performed with Riccardo Muti, Michael Tilson Thomas, Sir Neville Marriner, and Kent Nagano, among others, with the Vienna Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony, the London Philharmonic, and the BBC Philharmonic. He has recorded for EMI, Chandos, and Camerata.
In recent years, his conducting career has flourished, and Ian is considered one of the leading brass conductors in the world. He has conducted the Oslo Philharmonic, the Liceu Opera, the Danish Radio Symphony, the Copenhagen Opera, the Sønderborg Symphony, the Bern Symphony, the Rheinland-Pfalz State Philharmonic, the Asturias Symphony, the Norrlands Opera, and the New World Symphony.
Ian is professor of trombone at the Hochschule der Künste in Bern and at the Royal Academy of Music in London. With more than 70 former students holding professional positions—some of them at the highest possible level—he is one of the most successful brass pedagogues of all time. His students have also won the most prestigious competitions, such as the ARD, the Royal Overseas League, the Aeolus Competition, and the ITF competitions. His podcast has had a far-reaching impact on musicians around the world, and he loves being able to support future European talent as brass coach of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra. In 2012 he received the ITA Award, a lifetime achievement honor granted by the International Trombone Association.
Despite having lived outside the United Kingdom for 20 years, Ian remains obsessed with cricket. His main hobby is Burgundy wine, and in 2017 he was honored by the region with the title of “Chevalier de Tastevin.”
